The Scheme

The Scheme

Stretford gets a new town centre. The space behind the Essoldo cinema and the vacant boatyard will be the location for a community garden, a town square, a shop and a resuscitated version of the Essoldo cinema.

The space works with a number of different elements. This makes sure that the activities are well distributed and offer things to do for everyone.

The patches shape the square just like the new Essoldo and the open staircase. The elements work together to give the space a new identity.

The different elements are the new Essoldo, the shop, the Plaza, the re-invented boatyard and the square.

The layout provides different access routes for the space. People can go through the shop, alongside the Essoldo, come down from the bridge or through the bottom of the boatyard. A small mean of transport will provide a connection between the boatyard and the square.

Perspectives

Perspectives

The square provides a new designed landscape for unused space behind the old Essoldo cinema.

An open plaza opens up to the canal, it gives a visual connection to the canal from Stretford Public Hall. Historically, there had never been a physical connection to the canal, it had been separated from the town by walls, only used by commuters. The design includes the canal and the Essoldo, two subject which have lost much of their importance and significance of the years, to bring them back to the people of Stretford.

The boatyard will experience major development. The space is vacant, not used anymore despite its grand potential. A large portion of the green spaces and patches will be accommodated on the narrow space across the canal, accessible from the road leading down from the main road.

A hut for workshops and storage sits at the top of the boatyard, accessible for everyone to store crops and learn about the plants and trees sitting on the site.

The boatyard is connected through a small boat to the other side of the canal, to transport crops to the shop, where they will be processed.

The resuscitated Essoldo develops a new shape- the iconic entrance is replicated, making the front the back and the back the front. It serves as an entrance to the square as well as a gateway into town.

The interior accommodates a small museum, dedicated to the years of recent history of this building, as well as the history of the cinema.

The rest of the building gives the town back what it has lost many years ago- a small cinema.

The shop is divided into a number of different sections.

The part facing the canal serves as a small café, with open window fronts to connect to the canal.

The back room is for the processing of the crops while the roofed space between back room and the Essoldo is used as an open air shop, which exhibits and showcases all of the flowers, fruits and vegetables produced by the members of the community.
